Ex-international, Dosu Joseph has called on the technical crew of the Super Eagles led by Gernot Rohr not to drop the services of Torino midfielder, Joel Obi from the team ahead of the 2018 World Cup.

Joel made his comeback to the Super Eagles fold in the team's 1-0 win over Poland and 2-0 lose to Serbia in an international friendly match that was played last month (April).

Having displayed a good performance for Torino this season, the Atlanta Olympic Gold medalist in the men's football told that Joel still remains a valuable asset for the team at the World Cup.

"I really don't think it's a bad idea to have Joel Obi in the Super Eagles fold in preparation for the World Cup based on his performance for Torino," Dosu told

"Besides, going by his performance against Poland and Serbia, it is left for the technical crew to decide on his future with the senior national team.

"However, I am sure that he would be a great asset for the team at the World Cup considering the fact that we can't be depending on Mikel Obi always."

Joel got is Super Eagles debut under Samson Siasia in Nigeria's  2-1 win over Sierra Leone at the National Stadium in Lagos in February 2011.

Etebo to miss Madrid match

Super Eagles midfielder, Oghenekaro Etebo has not recovered from a muscle injury that kept him out of Nigeria’s recent friendlies and will not play in today’s La Liga clash between Las Palmas and Real Madrid at the Estadio de Gran Canaria.

Manager of the Canary Islands based team, Paco Jémez, has omitted Etebo from the list of 18 players called up for the match day 30 fixture.

Former Nigeria international, Emmanuel Emenike is still on the sidelines, and also misses out, while Imoh Ezekiel is in line to play his third game for the club, as he has been included in the matchday squad.

Etebo was prevented from travelling to Wrocław last week to link up with his Super Eagles teammates for the friendly against Poland after Las Palmas medics recommended that he should stop all sporting activities. And he was left out of the matchday squad versus Serbia three days ago after failing a fitness test on his arrival in the English capital.

Prior to the midfielder’s spell on the sidelines, he had started all the matches played by Las Palmas in the Spanish top-flight since completing a loan move from Portuguese setup CD Feirense. reports that Etebo will earn wages of 120,000 euros net (approximately N52.8 million) for the five months he is at Las Palmas and that amount does not include performance-related bonuses.

Meanwhile, Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr has admitted that he was facing a selection dilemma but has welcomed it nonetheless, as he has three quality players to pick from for the left-back position.

The coach has stressed that he’s not confused about his first-choice of left-back ahead of the 2018 World Cup.

Amkar Perm defender Brian Idowu appears to be ahead of Elderson Echiejile (Monaco) and Ola Aina (Chelsea) in Rohr’s pecking order of left backs, with the Russian-based star starting the last two games played by the Super Eagles in March.

Liverpool loanee banned in Belgium

Taiwo Awoniyi who was sent off playing for Mouscron at the weekend has been slammed with a three-match ban by the football body in Belgium.

Video footages showed that the Nigerian striker was held for some time by Lokeren's Arno Monsecour and while Awoniyi swung his arm back - his elbow caught the nose of the defender who was left with a bleeding nose.

According to Belgian Football, the Nigeria U23 star has been banned for three match days by the Royal Belgian Football Association (KBVB), of which two are effective, and fined 800 euros.

It thus means that the 20-year-old will miss Royal Excel Mouscron's last game of the regular season against AS Eupen plus their first game in the playoffs if the decision is not appealed against.

For Awoniyi, this ban will be a sour point in what has been an outstanding season for him at Mouscron.

The former Golden Eaglets forward is their joint-leading scorer in the Belgian First Division A with seven goals from 27 appearances.

Nigeria goalkeeper trainer in Spain to monitor Uzoho

Super Eagles’ Technical Adviser, Gernot Rohr has dispatched one of the team’s goalkeeper trainers, Pionetti Enrico to Spain to do some work with young goalkeeper Francis Uzoho ahead of the 2018 FIFA World Cup finals.

Enrico, who came into the Nigeria senior team’s mix ahead of the B squad’s 2018 African Nations Championship qualifying fixture against Benin Republic six months ago, arrived in Spain penultimate weekend.

Uzoho was reserve goalkeeper as Nigeria’s U17 boys won the FIFA U17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates in 2013, and won his first senior cap in a friendly against Argentina in Krasnodar in November last year. He obviously impressed Coach Rohr.

Ball fans are a bit concerned about Super Eagles’ goalkeeping duties at the FIFA World Cup in Russia, with Carl Ikeme (who was between the pipes for the qualifying matches against Swaziland, Zambia and Algeria at the beginning of the race) still undergoing treatment for leukaemia.

Uzoho has kept 10 clean sheets out of 14 matches for the Deportivo La Coruna B squad this term and showed tremendous confidence and agility in the Eagles’ come-from-behind defeat of reigning world vice champions Argentina.

Forgotten Super Eagles striker Obafemi Martins was on target in the Asian Champions League for Shanghai Shenhua on Tuesday against Sydney FC at Hongkou Football Stadium in China.

The 33-year-old forward took the lead on the 26th minutes of the encounter as he bundled home at the front post from Li Yunqiu's low cross, but within eight minutes Sydney had turned it around.

Shanghai Shenhua were level before the break, however, as Andrew Redmayne punched Bai Jiajun's cross to the edge of the area, where Colombia international Fredy Guarin cushioned a calm volley beyond the despairing dive of the scrambling goalkeeper.

Elsewhere in Group H, Kashima Antlers took top spot as Mu Kanazaki's brace earned his side a 2-1 win at Suwon Bluewings.

The Japanese side are with four points closely followed by Suwon Bluewings with three points while Shanghai Shenhua are third.

Sydney occupy bottom place with one point.

Shanghai Shenhua tackle South Korea side in next fixture Suwon Bluewings away on the 7th March.

Ademola Lookman scores on RB Leipzig debut

Nigerian youngster Ademola Lookman struck the winner on his debut against Borussia Moenchengladbach, 72 hours after completing a transfer deadline day move away from Everton to RB Leipzig.

After being on the pitch 11 minutes, the London-born striker collected the ball around 30 yards from goal and with plenty of space in front of him. Showing confidence and desire beyond his years and experience in the league, Lookman raced past as many as three defenders across the box before firing a perfect shot across Gladbach goalkeeper Tobias Sippel and into the bottom corner in the 89th minute.

The 20-year-old moved on deadline day despite Everton manager Sam Allardyce urging him to move on loan in England.

Allardyce said Lookman's move to Leipzig was "one of the most unusual situations I've been in", adding the deal was a "big challenge" for the player's development.

The former England manager said he hoped Lookman "proves us all wrong" and in finding the net on debut, his goal delivered Leipzig's first win in three matches, moving them third in the table.

England Under-21 international Lookman joined the Toffees from Charlton for £11m in January 2017 and has made seven Premier League appearances this season, starting one game.
