The Rome based outfit began the Seria A on a rollercoaster manner within the early stages of the league but still ended up second fiddle to title rivals. Juventus were presented with their 6th straight Scudetto title yesterday while rivals Napoli and her faithful could do nothing. 9 months early, Napoli were in a position of immense advantage in the title race after just 14 matches with the Naples based outfit securing 38 points out of 42 points allocated while title rivals Juventus mustered 34 points.

Juventus’s visit to Stadio San Paolo was a big litmus test for the Partenopi in the title race even though many site that predicts football matches correctly gave them a low winning odd.  Napoli were unbeaten as of prior to the week with 12 victories and 2 draws in their 14 league games. Gli Azzurri failed to open a big gap between them and the Old lady as they lost by a lone goal. The game had a psychological effect on the two sides. Napoli had to try to hold on to their one-point advantage over rival with about 24 matches to go.

Juventus, on the other hand, were rejuvenated as they began the chase game. The next weekend both Napoli and Juventus failed to take advantage as both ended up playing a dull draw in their respective fixture. Napoli had to another round of victories in 10 consecutive but the Juventus also pushed like the Partenopi as the also maintained a consistent victory in 10 consecutive games. Napoli as a club might be said to have one of the best attacking minded team in Italy with a host of talents but the players lacked the mentality and passion required to drive their ambition home.

The side finally failed to the demands of pressure in March in a derby match with Roma. Roma prior to the game were on a 3 game winless run but they away side came from behind to stun Gli Azzurri in front of the Sao Paolo faithful. A week later their title dominance of the past 6 months was almost a foregone conclusion after a surprising draw with struggling Inter Milan. Partenopi tried to mount a late surge on the title on the title after defeating rivals Juventus in Turin but like the Proverbial Ferrari with limited gasoline, their ambition was put to bed at Stadio Artemio Franchi as Fiorentina trashed the Naples based outfit 3-0.

Napoli’s 9 months of excellent displays, winning streak and attacking football could only lead the Naples based outfit to a second position, a position they would not have imagined finishing at despite their 14-match unbeaten run. Napoli no doubt have talented players but it takes more than talents to lift league trophy especially in the top-flight division. Passion, Desire and above all title-winning mentality. This was the difference between Juventus and Napoli. Napoli surrendered the title when the constraint such as Fatigue, Pressure and Injuries set in. No Doubt Napoli have themselves to blame for throwing away an opportunity to win the league one of the best seasons in Italian top flight division.
